Textastic App Reviews

Nothing short of a steal

With all of the editors available for the mac this one has the most bang for your buck. This is a no brainer if you write code.

Simply excellent

This is a brilliant app! I have tried many code editors on the App Store but none come close to this one. It’s very fast, code highlighting is perfectly consitent, everything is pretty much set up the way you want it to be from the start. And the price is also very affordable. Hats off to the developer!

Just found Texastic and I’m glad I did

I’ve used other tools, like everyone else, and am so tired of working with the licensing costs from Ultraedit (although it is great) that as soon as I installed this, I knew this was the ONE. Nice job. Now if I could only find a file or folder compare tool as great as this app!

Excellent well thought

The functionality you need without the bloat you don’t. After using for half an hour I set it as the default editor for .cpp, .h, .c, .hpp… even .txt.

Love it

I love this editor on my iPad and think it’s great to be able to sync files through iCloud between my mac and iPad. Makes it easier to pick up and go without lugging around the macbook.

Textastic has matured into a first-class code editor

Alexander Blach did developers a big favor by creating the first serious code editor for iOS. The early OS X versions were solid but lacking some crucial features (for me least). Those gaps have largely been filled now. Here are some outstanding features: - Excellent code completion - Emmet support - compatibiliity with Textmate syntax definitions and themes - symbols support better than some much more expensive editors I have In the past I’ve used Textastic when I was stuck with nothing but an iPad or for quick editing jobs, but I can honestly say now that if it was the only code editor I had, I’d be fine. Highly recommended whether you’re a sometimes or serious developer.

No Print support in the Mac version :(

There is no print support in the Mac version

Pretty Solid but missing one key feature...

Solid app. Please add highlights to the closing of tags when opening is selected. Example, When <div> is selected, the corresponding </div> is highlighted.

I like it, mostly. No print support

I like this editor. It’s simple, and just does what it does, without a lot of fuss. In fact, it’s so simple it has no printing support! I rarely print, but to do it in Textastic I have to launch TextEdit, copy the content out of Textastic, paste in TextEdit and print. Really? Although I’m glad they are circumspect about adding features, I think that’s a little too austere. But again, the actual editor is nice.

No FTP support

Good app just has no way to upload via FTP to server. Its not a big deal but if I knew it before I bought it I would of kept looking for another app. I bought the iPad version first and it can upload via FTP. I have a small hobby site I mess around with but the iPad version was a bit to clumsy to work with for long periods of time so I decided to get the mac version. I was to happy with the iPad version to see what was different. Once I downloaded and installed it I was at a loss on how to add a connection. After a little bit of looking around I saw the mac version has no FTP support.

better is Textmate

This is not very customizable cannot “fine tune” how you want different types of specific code to color up, no ‘save as’ feature forcing you to save file as html so you must go back to file and manually change extension type. worth MAYBE 2.99 not near 10.00

decent editor - could use more functionality

I bought this app purely on the strength of it’s iOS version, and so far I’m happy with it. It’s fast and stable, and gets the job done. Some things that would be nice to have are: * ability to click click a folder in the navigation pane and have an option to create a new file * ability to right click a file in the navigation pane and have options to copy, delete, etc… * a console and terminal would be awesome * git integration would be nice Even without that functionality, textastic is now my go-to general code editor, mainly because it’s so much more stable than the other editors that I’ve tried.

Love Love Love this app!

This text editor allows me to do my homework (yay!). My HTML5/CSS3 teacher requires us to use Notepad or Notepad++ and of course Mac doesn’t have that. Our textbook has bad things to say about Mac’s TextEdit app and after saving my homework file and not being able to go back in to edit it the next day, I can see why. I have not had a single issue with Textastic. It does everything I hear a text editor is supposed to do. I especially like how it connects to iCloud and connects with my iPhone. At any time, I could close my laptop, pick up my phone, and there’s my markup. Just like Pages! I also like that the phone app lets you preview what your markup would look like rendered in a browser. As a student new to HTML5 and CSS3, this is very helpful. I cannot wait to get an iMac and get a full-sized screen to work with and expand my tool kit. The description in the advertisement said “iCloud support” and it truly supports me! I do think, however, that it’s false advertising to show the code coloring in the preview screens on the App Store. Unless I’m missing a button or a menu, my version of Textastic has yet to provide a way to change the color of different parts of the markup. Everything you type is exactly the same color. The only thing you can set a color to is the theme so, it’s all gray background with all white font, all black background with all white font, burgundy background with all black font, white background with all black font.... There’s no way to make a teal background with elements in orange, attributes in purple, CSS properties in red, values in gold, and text in black. I have no idea how they got the shots above at all. I’ve been through the menu for four weeks now trying different things. Maybe I’m too new to this? I FINALLY found the manual (the link in the Help menu doesn’t take you directly to a manual… you have to go through a couple screens first). I’ll update my review and let you know what I find… Nope. I found no button or menu for Textastic to set colors to different code types. Ah well, that would be a privilege and not a necessity. I still LOVE the app. :-)

Great companion to the incredible iOS versions.

This is a great, on-the-go editor. Its super light-weight, knows dozens of languages, and the developer has an open forum where he responds to bugs and feature requests. For $2.99, its a steal.

Good, but very barebones.

I was looking for a place to code without distractions. I need to write in HTML, CSS, and Javascript as I do web design, so this, with its - ridiculously - large library of languages seemed perfect. And it is very good! The minimalistic design allows me to focus, however I do wish that they would develop more specific apps for people like me who could use a live preview. But I got what I payed for!

Nothing special

The iOS version is awesome, way better than this. This version has a long way to go before it is ready for serious developers, doesn’t even support FTP.

Great

This is a great text editor with code completion. Well worth the money.

Business Users Beware

I used this editor to create diagnostic tools for realtime space applications. It appears to be an excellent code editor for Python, but it apparently is designed to track you, possibly to steal intellectual property. After you use it long enough to learn it thoroughly, it forces you to sign into the App Store with a phony error message (app was not purchased on this computer). If you are able, I strongly urge running a tcpdump to see where it’s sending your data. I cannot do this; I am reporting it to DoD, as required by law.

iOS app waaaaaay better than desktop version!

I have both the ios app (iPhone and iPad) and desktop version, yet the desktop lacks the much needed sftp/ftp/webdav support. It is simply a code editor with syntax highlighting color schemes that match the ios version. It does feature code completion, but if you’ve used the ios version and have come to love the ability to upload your changes to a server…the desktop version does NOT feature this! Would’ve been a nice feature that when a document is saved, it automatically uploaded to a specified server.

Really good.

Fast and pretty. What more do you want?
